Use Well-Draining Succulent Soil

This succulent grows best in well-drained succulent soil. It's very important that you use well-drained succulent soil so the soil doesn't stay soaked with water for several days. If you overwater the succulent and the soil stays wet and not dry for several days, then mold and bacteria will grow and appear. The mold and bacteria will then attack the roots of the succulent giving it root rot. Root rot is known as the #1 most common reason why a succulent will die.

To avoid mold/bacteria and root rot, you must use well-drained succulent soil. Well-drained succulent soil will keep the soil dry at a very fast rate preventing mold/bacteria and root rot from appearing. Any succulent grower expert will tell you that you need well-drained succulent soil, it's definitely a requirement for growing this succulent and every single other succulent out there.

We recommend using arguably the best succulent soil out there "Ramsey Succulent Soil"

Proper Sunlight/Light

Make sure that you don’t give your string of pearls succulent too much sun. Too much sun will cause a sunburn and dry the leaves. If this happens to your string of pearls then there’s a high chance that it will die because it’s sunburn.

You must make sure that you only give this succulent about 6 hours of sunlight each and every day. This is a great amount for growing healthy, happy and to prevent sunburn or etiolation. Make sure this succulent is also getting some shade so it can cool down from the sun!

Again, if you start to see your string of pearls look dry or have wrinkled leaves then there’s a chance that the sunlight is damaging it. If it’s getting sunburn then definitely make sure to grow it in the shade for a while so it can recover.

Just make sure you grow this succulent in partial shade and partial sunlight throughout the day. It needs sunlight to survive but not too much. Again, the leaves are very very delicate and if it gets too much sunlight then they will start to fry.

Proper Watering

Probably the main reason why most string of pearls die is due to watering issues. In order to grow the string of pearls succulent healthy and happy you will need to follow a great watering schedule for the plant.

You should only water the string of pearls succulent once a week and once a week only. However, if the soil feels or looks very dry then you should give the succulent some water as well.

You should also water the string of pearls if its beads look very dry. If the beads look wrinkled or dry then that’s a sign of underwatering and dehydration. You must water the succulent immediately if this happens.

Also make sure that you don’t overwater this succulent. As we mentioned, too much water that sits in the soil for several days will cause mold and bacteria to grow and appear. The mold and bacteria will then attack the roots of the succulent giving it root rot.

This happens most of the time due to lack of proper soil and just too much water. This is why it’s very important to only water your string of pearls succulent once a week and once a week only. Again, or water it when the beads look very dry or if the soil looks or feels very dry.

Make sure you keep track of the exact last time you watered your string of pearls succulent. If a watering issue does occur then you will know exactly what’s going on with the succulent. Just make sure to keep an eye out on the succulent for overwatering and underwatering issues.

Proper Pot Size

You must use a proper size succulent pot in order to keep your string of pearls succulent alive. If you use a pot that is way too big for the plant then issues will occur. It’s important to use a pot that’s about the same size as the succulent.

If you use way too big of a pot, then that gives root rot a chance to appear. The pot is way too big giving the roots a lot of free space. This gives enough room for mold and bacteria to appear which isn’t good.

You must just use a proper pot that is big enough for the succulent. Also use a succulent pot with a drainage hole if you can find one you like. A drainage hole is very important because it helps drain all the water at the bottom of the pot, helping the soil stay dry avoiding root rot.

Just make sure you don’t use a pot that’s way too big and way too small. It depends what size string of pearls you have. If you have a very small one then make sure to grow it in a small pot. If you have a very large one then make sure to grow it in a nice size pot for it.

Grow in Right Conditions

In order to grow this succulent healthy and prevent it from dying, you will need to grow it in proper conditions. This succulent isn’t cold hardy at all, which means the cold weather will kill this succulent easily.

You must make sure you keep this succulent warm but not too warm or hot. If you plan on growing it outdoors and you live in a location that gets freezing temperatures, then you must move it indoors. Once the winter hits you will have to move this succulent indoors so it doesn’t freeze to death.

Cold weather will seriously easily kill this succulent. You must make sure it stays as warm and possible to survive. Basically just make sure this succulent doesn’t experience cold freezing weather. If it does then it will start to get frost on it and freeze.

This is why it’s very important to move this succulent indoors during the winter. This is of course if you live in a location where it gets freezing temperatures during the winter. They can definitely survive outdoors during the winter in Southern California.

I have a string of pearls and it’s doing amazing. It sits in my kitchen window, I water it about every 2 days, used miracle grow potting soil, and the pot doesn’t have drain holes 🤷🏼‍♀️
