Should you Grow the String of Pearls Indoors or Outdoors?

This succulent can be grown indoors and outdoors, but outdoor growing is definitely the best for this succulent. It loves and thrives in warm and dry environments, so outdoor growing is best especially if you live in zones 9 and warner. However if you live in an area that gets under 30 degrees you will have to move and grow this succulent indoors for the winter. It’s not cold hardy, so cold temperatures and frost will harm and most likely kill the succulent.

Growing indoors is still great and popular! You will just need to make sure that this succulent gets enough light so it can thrive. It’s best to pick a spot that gets plenty of sunlight, so it can thrive and grow healthy.

 

How to take Good Care of String of Pearls

String of pearls are very easy to grow and care for. You will just need some requirements in order to grow this succulent healthy. They need proper lighting, soil, watering, a large enough pot, proper temperature and will need some fertilizer in order to grow healthy. If properly cared for, this succulent will live up to five years. You can also propagate this succulent and grow many other ones as well.

Light Requirements: 

String of pearls will need to get at least 6 hours of bright indirect sunlight every single day, this is for both indoor and outdoor growing. You will also need to give this succulent some partial shade so it can take a break from the sunlight and avoid sun damage.

When growing indoors you must make sure that this succulent gets enough sunlight. You must find a spot indoors that gets plenty of sunlight, such as an east facing window. Just make sure that you don’t place it too close to the window, the window could act like a magnifying glass and burn the leaves of the succulent.

Temperature Requirements:

Pot for String of Pearls

Now which succulent pot should you use for your string of pearls succulent? Well, string of pearls have very shallow roots, so they do not need such a big deep pot. 

Just get a size pot that is big enough to fill the brim. If the pot is too big, your soil will stay wet for a very long time because there’s too much soil. If your soil is wet and moist way too long, then your succulent may experience root rot.

This is why it’s very important to choose the right size pot for your string of pearls and for all the succulents out there. Make sure the pot isn’t too big, or too small, also make sure there is a drainage hole so the water can leak out of the bottom instead of flooding the pot.

 

Watering String of Pearls

Again, these are very sensitive plants when it comes to watering. This succulent should only get about 1-2 days of water every single week. You should also water it when the soil looks or feels very dry. Make sure to not overwater this succulent, it's very sensitive to water and could get root rot easily.

Be on the lookout for dry/wrinkled leaves, these are signs of under watering. If you do see dry/wrinkled leaves then dig your finger into the soil, if the soil feels or looks very dry then water the succulent.

It’s very important to keep track of the exact last time you watered the string of pearls. If a watering issue does occur then you will know the exact reason what’s going on with the succulent. When giving it water make sure you give it enough so water leaks out of the bottom of the drainage hole.

If you want your string of pearls to bloom these beautiful flowers, then simply cut back on watering! Also keep your succulent in great temperature in the winter such as 60 degrees, this will help with blooming in the summer! Keep in mind that string of pearls rarely bloom indoors, it will happen if they get enough sunlight but it’s very rare. For blooming you will have to grow outdoors so it can grow very naturally.

How to Propagate String of Pearls 

Propagating string of pearls is very easy to do however, it does take some time and patience of course. First thing you will need to do is cut a 3-4 inch long cutting from the plant. After you cut the cutting make sure you let it sit out for 2-4 days so it can form a callus. A callus is very important and one must form so it can root.

After a callus forms go ahead and plant that cutting in fast/well draining succulent soil. Water 2 days a week and grow it in full shade for the first week. After that first week then you can move it to full sun and give it at least 4 hours of sunlight every single day.

The most important part when propagating the string of pearls is to let a callus form after you cut off a cutting. If a callus doesn’t form and you plant the cutting it won’t root. A callus helps cuttings or leaves root, so that’s why it’s very important to make sure the callus forms. Once the callus forms you should see roots start to appear after about 2 weeks.

How to and When to Repot String of Pearls

String of pearls will only need to be repotted when it has become way too big for its pot, when it’s not growing any larger, or when the succulent has become root bound. Once the plant shows these signs then it’s definitely time to repot it.

This succulent is very delicate and it also has very shallow root systems, which means the roots are delicate. If the succulent just simply looks like it’s growing healthy and happy then there’s no reason to repot it. If you do repot it then make sure to be very gentle with it because it’s a very delicate plant. You’re supposed to repot in the spring if you plan to, also the soil must be dry before repotting.

 

Here’s how to Repot a String of Pearls Succulent:

The first step is to get the plant out of its pot. You must be very careful when you do this, please be very gentle or you will most likely harm the succulent.

Go ahead and grab the bottom of the succulent pot, then gently grab the stems of the plant. You are going to want to lean the pot over to the side so gravity can help you out and get the plant out of the pot.

Gently pull on the stems and the pot at the same time very carefully. Keep pulling gently until the plant comes out of the pot. If the plant isn’t budging then you can dig your finger around the edges of the pot so you can get the plant to budge a little. If this isn’t working for you then you can grab a small shovel and dig out the plant very gently, avoiding the root system.

After you get the pot out, it’s time to plant it in a bigger pot. Get your fast/well draining succulent soil and fill up the pot half way. After you fill it go ahead and place the succulent in the pot. After you place it, use the extra succulent soil you have and fill in the rest of the pot.

You can pat down the soil so the succulent grows straight and sturdy. However, don’t pat down too hard, if you do then you are not letting enough airflow go through to the soil.

After repotting the string of pearls go ahead and water it until water goes out through the drainage hole. Place the succulent in an area that gets plenty of sunlight so it can grow healthy and beautiful. 

How to and When to Prune String of Pearls

You can prune string of pearls if you want to propagate some cuttings or leaves. You can also prune them when the plant has become etiolated, which means the succulent is probably stretching. After you prune you can then plant those cuttings or leaves and propagate them, which we discussed already.

Basically, pruning is only for cleaning the succulent or saving the succulent from etiolation. Only cut dead leaves or cuttings then try to propagate them and make more string of pearl succulents. Pruning will make this succulent look even more beautiful because you are giving it a nice clean up!
