Let’s do it!

DO SUCCULENTS NEED A DRAINAGE HOLE?

So do succulents need a drainage hole in order to grow healthy and happy? The answer is yes and no. Having a drainage hole definitely helps a lot, simply because it drains the excess water out the bottom of the pot. This helps keep the soil as dry as possible and prevents overwatering and root rot.

However, if your succulent pot doesn’t have a drainage hole it’s totally fine! You can definitely still grow your succulents healthy and happy without a drainage hole. You will just need to be careful with watering and other things of course. We will give you all the tips and tricks on how to do this!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT POT

There are so many different types of succulent pots out there, but there’s a certain type that is perfect for growing succulents without a drainage hole. Terracotta succulent pots are the best simply because they're made of porous clay. Porous clay succulent pots help the soil get dry quicker, evaporating the water faster. This is great for growing succulents simply because this will help keep the soil dry preventing overwatering and root rot.

PREPARING THE POTTING MEDIUM

When growing succulents in pots without drainage, you are risking your succulent to get over watered and to get root rot. The soil will stay wet for several days, allowing mold and bacteria to occur and then attacking the roots of the succulents.

In order to prevent this you will need the water to drain or get soaked up somewhere. You can add pebbles, rocks, pumice, stones, or even sand to trap the water. This will get the water to not sit in the soil touching the roots for several days. It simply traps the water in the rocks, pebbles, pumice, etc and then dries it up, helping prevent root rot.

It’s very easy to set up the medium. You just need to simply put a layer of the rocks, sand, pebbles, pumice, etc at the bottom of the pot evenly. If you have a very small pot then you will only need a little bit of rocks, pebbles, sand, etc, but if you have a very large pot then you will need a good amount.

After you fill up your pot with our medium materials, then you will need to add your fast/well draining succulent soil. Add your succulent soil and fill up the rest of the pot, leaving a little bit of room for planting your succulent of course.

WATERING:

When you are watering succulents in pots without drainage holes, it’s very important that you do not overwater them. Overwatering them will simply easily cause root rot and will most likely harm your succulent. Don’t add too much water, only water 1-2 days a week or when the soil looks or feels very dry.

You can use a moisture meter to see how wet the soil is, this will help you to know when to water the succulent. If you don’t have a moisture meter then you can just dig your finger into the soil. Dig your finger into the soil and if the soil feels very dry then go ahead and water the succulent.

If your pots don’t have drainage holes, then you seriously need to measure how much water you are pouring in your pots.

You can measure how much water in many ways such as a measuring cup, a squeeze bottle, or any cup/measuring spoons. The easiest way is definitely with just your kitchen measuring cup.

The key to adding water to pots without drainage holes is to know exactly how much water you are putting in. If you simply put in way too much it doesn’t matter how fast drainage your soil is. Too much water will soak the soil making a puddle for a couple days. Your succulent doesn’t want that, it wants to drink and stay dry.

HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU POUR?

When your succulent pot doesn’t have a drainage hole, it can be very tricky to figure out how much water to put in. The ultimate goal with this is to put just enough water that gets all the soil wet, but avoiding a puddle at the bottom.

All soils are different, and very different, so after you add some water make sure to keep an eye out for overwatering.

That’s pretty tricky right?

INSTEAD DO THESE MEASUREMENTS:

When pouring water, poor equal to half the volume of the planter/pot. If your pot holds about a cup of soil, you should poor about a ½ cup of water.

These are typical measurements for pot size, but you need to adjust as time goes by. We recommend just starting with a little bit of water, keep an eye out on your succulent, and add more if your succulent looks like it needs it.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WATER?
